Project Summary

A special thanks and hello to all of those who helped out and/or agreed to be interviewed at the 2003 Wahine Championships.

It was another banner year for the contest - exciting to watch and to be a part of.

See you in the surf!

Bill

Project Summary

'On the Incoming Wave: Pioneer Women Surfers of North Carolina' is currently in production in southeastern North Carolina. The film will document the growth of women's surfing in southeastern North Carolina from the 1970s to today and will feature interviews with many of the women who have made the Cape Fear coast synonymous with 'women's surfing.'

In addition to a historic 'look back' at how women's surfing began and who started it, the program will take a close look at the history and current status of the annual East Coast Wahine Championships, the first ever all female surf competition on the east coast. Valued as a haven of sisterhood since its first year, the 'Wahines', as it has come to be known, continues to flourish. The documentary will explore the special atmosphere as well as the tragic event which early organizers to create the contest

The project is a non-profit independent documentary being produced and directed by William J. Bolduc, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Communication Studies at UNCW.
