Research Efforts:

My research involves the study of the tectonic evolution of the North American craton from the Late Proterozoic to the Mesozoic era in the central and eastern Piedmont of North Carolina and west-central Idaho. It is centered upon detailed geologic mapping of deformed igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks within and among a variety of tectonostratigraphic terranes. After establishing the lithodemic and geochemical framework of an area, I concentrate on such topics as the microscale to macroscale analyses of structural and metamorphic fabric elements preserved in the rocks, the mechanical control that fabric exerts on deformation, progressive deformation and metamorphism versus superimposed events during mountain building, P-T-t histories, geochemical terrane correlations and petrogenesis, and the plate tectonic interactions responsible for accreting terranes to Laurentia and then North America.

My current interests include:

  • Geologic mapping, structural and metamorphic fabric analysis, and geochemical investigations of volcanogenic rocks on the western flank of the Wake-Warren anticlinorium in the eastern Piedmont of North Carolina.
  • Rock fabric development and its relationship to an arc-continent collision across the Salmon River suture zone and within the western Idaho shear zone in the Salmon River Canyon, Idaho County, west-central Idaho.
  • Structural and metamorphic studies, and geochemical investigations of the volcanogenic Carolina terrane in the north-central Piedmont of North Carolina and the Spring Hope terrane in the eastern Piedmont of North Carolina.
