Recreational Dance Skills Component

Kindergarten

• Non-locomotor, locomotor, and combination skills

• Creative sequences and simple patterned dances

First Grade

• Movement sequences

• Time, space, force, and flow

• Movement to an instrumental cue

• Creative sequences and simple patterned dances

Second Grade

• Moving using even and uneven patterns

• Simple folk and square dances

• Create and refine a movement sequence

Third Grade

• American and International folk dances

• Create movement sequences while manipulating objects

Fourth Grade

• Demonstrate movements found in folk dance, line dance, or other rhythmic activities

• Square dance skills

• Create dances using elements found in square, folk, line and/or other rhythmic activities

Fifth Grade

• Demonstrate various dance steps

• Demonstrate popular folk and square dances

• Mixer and couple dances

• Create a dance combining the elements of speed, intensity, direction, and level

Sixth Grade

• Demonstrate square, folk, and social dance skills

• Create short movement compositions

Seventh Grade

• Demonstrate American Folk Dance forms and International Folk Dance forms

• Demonstrate Country Western Dance and Social Dance forms

• Create dances that use that use the various elements of time, space, force, and flow

Eighth Grade

• Demonstrate the ability to participate in contemporary and popular dances

• Demonstrate the ability to participate in a variety of square, folk, and social dances

• Create original dances using the elements found in recreational dance

High School

• Know and demonstrate folk, square, and social dance skills

• Evaluate dancing skills in terms of non-locomotor, locomotor, combination movements, and effort qualities
