Required materials:

Vis-à-vis, McGraw-Hill, 2000 (2^nd edition): textbook AND workbook

Course objectives: Acquire the basics of spoken and written French through listening, reading, speaking and writing activities. This course will be an introduction to the French-speaking world and will have a strong cultural component to it.

Course policies:

• Your participation is crucial in the class. Not only do you need to be physically present in the classroom, but you are expected to come prepared and ready to actively engage in discussion, exercises, etc. Students are responsible for being acutely aware of the new grammar introduced in class ahead of time and for completing their assignments daily. Short quizzes may be given, at the discretion of the instructor. As far as being absent is concerned, you are allowed four absences during the semester. Beyond that, your participation grade will suffer immensely.
• A test (interrogation) will be given at the end of each chapter. The lowest grade (1 out of 6) will be dropped. There will be NO make-up tests. If for some reason, you were to miss one test, that will be the test I will drop.
• Homework (devoirs) is due, in writing, at the beginning of class on the days indicated on the syllabus. It involves written and oral exercises. You will be able to do the oral exercises in the Foreign Languages Resource Center located in Lakeside 253. Homework is to be self-corrected, with a different-color ink. Late homework will NOT be accepted.
• You will write 3 short compositions during the semester. You will have the opportunity to make corrections and improvement for each of them, between the first draft (ébauche) and the final draft. Late work will NOT be accepted.
