- a good French/English dictionary (Harper Collins Unabridged, Harper Collins French Concise)

- Bescherelle (for verb conjugation)

Course objectives: To strengthen the four basic language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. To increase cultural awareness of the French-speaking world through reading assignments and films.

Course policies:

Your participation grade will be calculated according to your performance in various assignments, attendance and involvement in class, and vocabulary quizzes.

Not only do students need to be physically present in the classroom, but they are also expected to come prepared and ready to actively engage in discussion, exercises, etc. Students are responsible for being acutely aware of the new vocabulary and grammar introduced in class ahead of time and for completing their assignments daily. Short vocabulary quizzes will be given at the instructor’s discretion. As far as being absent is concerned, you are allowed four absences during the semester. Beyond that, your participation grade will suffer immensely.

Homework (devoirs) is due at the beginning of class on the days indicated on the syllabus. It will consist of written and oral exercises. All exercises are given at the end of the syllabus. Late homework will NOT be accepted.
You will write 3 compositions during the semester. You will have the opportunity to make corrections and improvement for each of them, between the first draft (ébauche) and the final draft. Late work will NOT be accepted.
At the end of the semester, an oral exam will be administered.
Four tests (interrogations) will be given, each covering two chapters. The lowest grade (1 out of 4) will be dropped. There will be NO make-up tests. If for some reason, you were to miss one test, that will be the test that will be dropped.

A 93-100 B- 80-82 D+ 67-69

A- 90-92 C+ 77-79 D 63-66

B+ 87-89 C 73-76 D- 60-62

B 83-86 C- 70-72 F 0-59
