Important grammatical terms

 

 

Noun: a person, a place or a thing

 

Adjective: a word that describes (modifies) a noun

Ex: I sat in a big, green chair.

I push my pesky brother in the red wagon.

 

Adverb: a word that describes (modifies) a verb or an adjective

Ex: he forcefully kicked the door. I was very scared.

 

Pronoun: a word that takes the place of a noun

Ex: Jeremy was hungry so he decided to eat a pie. After that his mom gave him a sandwich. He ate it too.

 

 

Subject: a word that denotes the doer of the action (a word that performs the action)

Ex: Sarah is shopping.

 

Direct object: a word that receives the action of the verb (the recipient of the action)

Ex: I hit the wall.

Ann gave George a cookie. Then, she called her doctor.

 

Indirect object: a word that receives the direct object

Ex: I sent a letter to my friend.

 

Past participle: verbal form used in compound tenses

Ex: I have never traveled to Brazil.
