Course description: This course is intended specifically for students who have studied 1-2 years of high school French and who might consider a major or minor in French. If you have taken 3-4 years of high school French, please see me and consider taking French 201, 202, or 301. Classes will be conducted mostly in French with some explanations in English. You are expected to prepare all assignments on your own before coming to class. We will spend our time in class practicing spoken French and discussing the assigned exercises and readings. We will undertake a study of introductory French grammar; please note that you will be expected to master all of the grammar in Vis-à-vis as the course progresses. We also will spend our time working on conversation and sketches in French, and we will analyze French cinema and discuss music and lyrics in French.

Course objectives: This course will strengthen students’ knowledge of spoken and written French through listening, reading, speaking and writing activities. More specifically, in this course, you will

-          develop your ability to express yourself in spoken and written French

-          participate in discussions based on a variety of exercises

-          increase your exposure to francophone cultures in and outside of France (the Francophone world: Western Europe; North America and the Caribbean; North, West, and Central Africa; Southeast Asia, and the Pacific).

-          be introduced to cinema and music from the francophone world.

Course policies:

• Your participation is crucial in the class. Not only do you need to be physically present in the classroom, but you are expected to come prepared and ready to actively engage in discussion, exercises, etc. Students are responsible for being acutely aware of the new grammar introduced in class ahead of time and for completing their assignments on time. Short quizzes may be given, at the discretion of the instructor. Students are allowed four absences during the semester. Missing more than 4 classes during the semester will have severe consequences on the participation grade.
• A test (interrogation) will be given every two or three chapters. The lowest grade (1 out of 5) will be dropped. There will be NO make-up tests. If for some reason you were to miss one test, that will be the test I drop.
• The homework (devoirs) grade consists of completing the assigned exercises in the workbook on time. Late homework or absence thereof will result in a 0.

• You will write 2 short compositions during the semester. Late work will NOT be accepted.
