Editing Images
File Formats
GIF - Transparency for the web - 256 color max holds sharp lines well for fonts also does animation by sequencing the images
JPEG
- Joint Photographic Experts Group, designed for professional
photographic work, millions of colors, the de facto image standard in
digital cameras and works on the web
PNG - Portable Network Graphics, the next generation web file format supports millions of colors, transparency
File Sizes
Right click on an image and select properties
from the menu this will show you the size. You don't want to put
anything much larger than 60 - 100 kilobytes on the web which leads to
the next topic...
Compression
Digital imaging
programs allow you to save out to the various file formats listed above
and when you save to the format you are allowed to control the
compression settings. Uncompressed give large images compressed
gives smaller images. Somewhere between fully compressed which
will pixelate and uncompressed is the sweet spot where the image looks
good and the file is small. Between 85 and 65 percent compression
seems to give a good balance.

screens work out to roughly 720 x 480 pixels. This isn't exact
since computers use square pixels and t.v. screens use rectangular
pixels making it really like 720 x 520
