Service Learning Project
This page is designed to help you understand our Service Learning Project (Community Web Project).

Step 1

October 28:
You must submit your client proposal today.  There are two pieces to this client proposal.  The first piece is the "service learning agreement."  The pdf version is here.  When your group goes to meet with the organization you must collect information in order to create your web site.  The proposal outlines your plans.  What do you plan to do?  What is your course of action? (this info can be gathered from our assignment sheet) It will also serve as a kind of contract between your group and the agency.  So, in the client proposal summarize what you "promise" to the agency.  For example, you should explain that your group is going to create a small web site or web page for the agency, but that they will receive all files on a disk that they will be able to use/upload at will..  Given that this is what you will do, you want to collect any logos, images, text, mission statements, guidelines, volunteer info, contact info, etc., because you will use these materials to build the site.  If you have zero information, you will have nothing to work with hence the project will inevitably fail.

Submission of these documents.  Create the client proposal (what you plan to do for the agency) first.  Once that is done, you will take the service learning agreement, and client proposal to the agency for the first meeting/contact.  You will describe what your group will do, etc.  If the contact person wants to amend your proposal for some special, but easily doable reason, you may alter the proposal on the spot for them.  Once you describe everything for them, have them sign our service learning agreement.  Now, once your have your client proposal done and the service learning agreement signed and completed you will submit both documents to me in hard copy in class on 10/26.

Step 2

Once your group has collected information you will need to organize it.  Get all your images in electronic form (if the agency has any electronic documents, images, etc. please request them or you will find your group retyping a lot of information.  In some cases you may have to do just that, which, actually, will help them as well).  At this point, you may want to assign someone to begin typing all of your text and scanning logos and images.  Once all documents are in some sort of electronic format you will be ready to begin constructing the site.

Step 3

From now on when you come to class you will need to bring all of your documents and be prepared to work on the site.  The first thing you need to do is create one folder.  And, from here, every page and image you use will need to be in this one folder.  For example, when you begin the very first page of the site, you will do a "save as," select the one folder you created, and save it there.  Any images you use on that page will need to be loaded into this folder as well.  At this point, you should be on your way.  Be sure to consult our assignment sheet here for a list of deadlines.
