SED 350                        FIELD EXPERIENCE AND CASE STUDY                      Dr. Steele

                                                                             

 

Students in this course will be required to prepare a case study of a student with learning disabilities based on 15 hours of observation and work in a public school program.  Information for the case study will be gathered by observing the student in various school settings, working with the child on a one-to-one or small group basis, examining records, reviewing test data, and talking with school personnel.  The case study should include the following topics:

 

1.         Description of setting

physical environment

atmosphere

children attending- exceptionalities, cultural diversity, gender, behaviors

available personnel

equipment and materials

classroom organization

methodology

other pertinent information about the program, classroom, and school

 

2.         Description of child

physical description

behavioral observations

academic performance

peer interactions

adult-child interactions

additional observational data concerning the student

 

3.         Background information

family data

medical history

educational history

social-emotional development

 

4.         Diagnostic information

test results and interpretations

summary

conclusions

 

5.         Recommendations

educational services

long-term goals

short-term objectives

suggestions for special education teacher

suggestions for classroom teachers

 

NOTE    All identifying data (child's name, teacher's name, name of school) will be

omitted from the case study
