PRACTICUM IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

CATALOG DESCRIPTION

Designed to provide a supervised practicum in public school programs for students with EBD, MR, and LD.  Provides experiences in diagnosing individual needs, developing educational programs, instructing students with mild disabilities, designing and implementing classroom management techniques, and consulting with teachers, administrators, parents, and other professionals.

 

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This course will emphasize the Watson School of Education conceptual framework, developing highly competent professionals to serve in educational leadership roles.

 

GENERAL OBJECTIVES   During the practicum, the students should be able to:

1.         Generate a model special education program for students with MR, EBD, and LD

2.         Demonstrate administration, scoring, and interpretation procedures for formal and informal diagnostic instruments

3.         Generate relevant instructional plans (lesson and/or unit plans) based on diagnostic data

4.         Demonstrate use of strategies, materials, and software in a broad range of skill areas for exceptional and culturally diverse students

5.         Generate and implement appropriate behavioral interventions and classroom management techniques

6.         Adopt an effective style for consulting, problem solving and decision making

 

REQUIREMENTS

1.         A minimum of 40 hours working in a special education setting (Students with MR, EBD, and LD) including diagnostic, planning, teaching, behavior management, and consultation activities.

2.         A model special education program design based on a current literature review.

3.         A field experience summary including descriptions and reflections of diagnostic, planning, teaching, behavior management, and consultation activities.

 

 

 

 

GRADING POLICIES

1.         A minimum of 40 field experience hours must be completed to receive course credit; performance will be observed and feedback provided during the semester

2.         The program design and summary grades will be based on ideas, organization, and writing style (ideas will count double)

3.         Grades will be assigned as follows:

A          94-100%                  

B          86-93%                    

C         70-85%                    

F           below 70%

4.         Final grades will be based on the 3 graded requirements as follows:

Field experience performance        50%

Model program design                     25%

Field experience summary              25%   

Final Grade                                        100%   (If any course requirements are not submitted by due date, the final grade will be lowered)
